Over twenty people living in Scotland are recognised for their work in health and care in the New Year’s honours list published today.

Two doctors with a long track record of research in their fields top the list. Dr Colin Currie, a former senior lecturer in geriatric medicine at the University of Edinburgh receives a CBE for charitable and political services. He has previously been recognised with an MBE for his work for reduce hip fractures in older people.

Professor John Pickard receives a CBE for his work on neurological research and treatment. Professor Pickard, who has made his home in Scotland, is professor emeritus of neurosurgery in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences of Cambridge university and remains a principal investigator in the Cambridge Neuroscience collaborative. He is the honorary director of the National Institute for Health Research's Healthcare Technology Cooperative for brain injury.

In all, 21 of the 87 people with homes in Scotland included in the honours list are recognised for their work in health, care and support for the wellbeing of others.

The number of Scots recognised is down sharply on the New Year’s honours list of a year ago.
